Oil country lathes deliver high power and torque
Claimed to be the most powerful machines in their class, a new range of oil country lathes has been introduced by Daewoo, Korea. Available from UK agent, Mills Manufacturing Technologies, the range comprises three models designated Puma 600, 700 and 800, each of which comes in two bed lengths offering 1600mm or 3200mm between centres. Configuration is as a 45 degree slant bed lathe, based on a one-piece Meehanite bed casting.
The precision ground, wrap-around, rectangular section guideways are induction hardened and coated with Rulon 142 fluroplastic resin.
Four parallel guideways are utilised; the upper pair carry the saddle / turret assembly while the lower pair support the programmable tailstock.
Rigidity and thermal stability have been engineered into the lathes to ensure high standards of finish and accuracy of machined components.
The Puma 600 and 700 use a three-speed gearbox to optimise torque throughout the speed range, while the Puma 800 has a two-speed unit.
In all cases the main spindle power source is a 45kW AC motor and the gearbox and motor are thermally isolated from the spindle.
Puma 600 machines have 162.5mm spindle bore and offer a speed range of 3 to 1,800 rpm; Puma 700 has a 188mm spindle bore and speeds in the range 3 to 1,500 rpm; while the Puma 800 spindle bore is 329mm diameter and speed range is 3 to 750 rpm.
For shaft-type work, a fully programmable tailstock is provided having a 160mm diameter quill with 150mm programmable stroke, mounted on the same guideways as the headstock.
The machines can turn up to 900 mm diameter.
X-axis travel is 470mm and Z-axis travel is 1650mm or 3235mm.
Puma 600 and Puma 700 models are additionally available with a powered tool / C-axis option and indexing in 0.001 degree increments.
Linear axes are driven via pre-tensioned, large-diameter ballscrews by AC servomotors with torque limiting clutch protection in the event of collision.
Rapid traverse speeds are 12m/min in X, 12m/min in Z on short bed machines and 10m/min in Z on long bed machines.
Maximum Z-axis thrust is 5,382 kgf.
All derivatives are offered with a 12-station, hydraulically driven turret capable of supporting boring bar diameters up to 60mm.
Station-to-station turret index time is 0.25 seconds.
Variants with the powered tooling option use a base mounting toolholder (BMT 85) turret and have an additional 11kW drive to up to twelve powered tool positions.
A range of optional equipment is available to customise Puma lathes to end user applications, including hydraulic chucks, a twin chuck system for the Puma 800, tool setting probe, tool monitoring and work steadies.
